Quiz 5 A. Chandler took Monica to a fancy restaurant and was about to propose to her.  However, just as Chadler was going to ask Monica to marry him, Monica's exboyfriend, Richard was coming in the restaurant.  They had a dinner together and Chandler didn't propose to Monica.  After they came home, Ross was confused about his relationship with Elizabeth.  They asked Ross about what kind of his future with Elizabeth he wanted to be.  Not knowing what to say, Ross decided to break up with her.  After Ross talked to Elizabeth about their break-up and came out from her apartment, he felt a little sad.  When Elizabeth suddenly called him, he was happy and even thought that she wanted to make up.  However, she just threw waterballs to him.          The other day, Richard went to Monica's work place and asked Monica to marry him.  Monica was shocked but she refused.  When Monica had a lunch with Chandler, she implied that she wanted a merriage, but Chandler acted on purpose that he didn't want to be married because he wanted to give Monica a surprise.  Monica was upset and she went to talk to Richard.  On the other hand, Rachel took Phoebe and Joey to a auction of a charity.  There, Joey got a boat but he didn't have money to pay it.  Rachel helped him to find another man to have the boat so that he wouldn't have to buy it.  Nevertheless, after Rachel made a deal with that man, Joey refused just because he wanted to have the boat "Mr. Bowmont".  Couldn't find where Monica was, Chandler was upset deeply.  While he open the door, there were a lot candles in the house and Monica was at home.  He was so moved and he asked Monica to marry him with his knees knelt down.  Monica said yes and their friends came in to celebrate their engagement.   B.     Among this six characters, I like Rachel the most because she usually makes difficult things out of the dilemma and keeps herself and her friends out of trouble.  For example, one day, she went to Paul's cottage to have a date and she found Ross was there, too!  She disattracted Paul from seeing Ross and helped him hide away from Paul.  I think it is good to have such a good friend like Rachel.  On the other hand, Phoebe is the one I like the least. The reason is that she usually say something that doesn't matter and is impossible to happen in reality.  This makes me feel that she is not a practical person.   C.     I think it's a good tool to increase my listening comprehension.  When we watch Friends, we learn how to use better words and skills to communicate with others and know what kind of culture Americans have.  Unlike other methods in improving my listening ability , I learn more from watching Friends because it helps me speak English more fluently not only by voice but by vision, which impresses me much more about what I learn in the episodes.         [JeT] 49777045 周婉婷

One day when he returned home as usual, there was no body in his house. He eventually found that his wife, Clara, was in the garage but she had been dead. Sandy only found a note that Clara had left. There were only four words on it, "Can you forgive me?" Sandy was confused about it. At the same time, the bank manager told Sandy that Clara's money had been transfered out of the bank. Sandy wanted to find out some clues to solve the problem. However, he had to defense for his sister's husband, Dixon Hartneel, whose company was investigated by the FBI. During the time that Sandy learnd about what situation the company was, he found out that Dixon told a lie that he didn't cheat the market to get the profit. After they went to the court many times, Sandy discovered that this case included many people, even his wife and his son-in-law, John, who was Dixon's employee. John was ordered by Dixon to transfer money from the company to the account that Dixon designated. In order to protect John from being prosecuted, Clara sent money to Dixon. This solved the problem that where Clara's money had gone. The reason why Clara killed herself was revealed by a bill coming from the hospital. It was a bill about a examination. Sandy took it to the hospital and found out the doctor who asked Clara to do the test. The doctor told Sandy that Clara had herpes years ago. Herpes was a virus that transfered through having sex with a person. This shocked Sandy. He didn't know who would be that person. One day、when he visited his sister, Silvia、who was Dixon's wife, to get some more information about Dixon's company, he found a safe near the couch. There were some papers about Dixon's health examination, and much to Sandy's surprise, there was a word that he had heard from the doctor, "herpes". Dixon was just the man he wanted to know. That night, the sound of an ambulance woke Sandy up. The man who was sent to the hospital was Dixon, and the next day, the doctor told Silvia and Sandy that Dixon was died from heart attack. Hearing this, Sandy felt relaxed because there would be a new start after FBI's investigation stopped. His family would be happy again with the whole family members' help. After reading this book, I think this time I choose the right book. When the clues seemed to be disclosed, I felt excited and nervous. When her face was wet with tears, her daughter, Miriam, ran along the river. Miriam saw the basket floating on the water and eventually the basket was picked up by the Queen. Queen named this baby boy Moses, which meaned " I took him out of the water." Moses grew in the palace with his brother, Rameses, the next Pharaoh. Moses and Rameses are brothers and best friends. One night, the Pharaoh named Rameses Prince Regent, who did some of the Pharaoh's work. To celebrate this, two of the Egyptian priests sent Rameses a gift. The gift was a beautiful girl named Tzipporah and her camel, which were stolen from other land. Tzipporah tried to bite Rameses when he came to her, so Rameses gave this present to Moses. When Moses went back to his room, he found that Tzipporah was walking away from the palace. Moses distracted guards from finding Tzipporah. After that, he ran out the palace to find Tzipporah, but he failed. Surprisingly, Moses met a young woman and she called him "brother". It was Miriam. Moses didn't believe her until Miriam sang a lullaby that was similar to him. Moses went to bed quickly after he returned to the palace. He had a dream that a woman put a baby in a basket floating on water. When he woke up with shake, he realized that he was the baby in his dream. The next day, when Moses and Rameses carried out their plan for building temples, Moses saw many Hebrew slaves working for building temples. At the same moment, an old slave was hit by a guard to work hard. Moses was furious abount this and he pushed the guard away from the old man. The guard fell down and was dead. Moses ran away the palace to escape from being punished. Moses was caught in a deep sea of sand and he was saved by a tribe. In the tribe, there was Tzipporah. To thank Moses for helping Tzipporah from the palace, Tzipporah and her people decided to keep Moses with them. One day, Moses found a cave near a mountain and there was a burning bush in the cave. Suddenly, he heard someone calling him. It was God. He told Moses what to do to set Hebrew people free. Then, Moses went back to Egypt to see Pharaoh. Moses was surprised because the Pharaoh now was Rameses, his brother. Moses told Rameses what God told him and he asked Rameses to free the Hebrew slaves or there would be disasters. It was not until the prince died from plague did Rameses permit Hebrew slaves to be free. A few days later, Rameses regreted freeing the slaves. He sent soldiers to run after Moses. When Moses and his people reached the Red Sea, they found soldiers chasing after them. Moses put his staff into the sea and all of a sudden, there was a path through the sea. After people reached on the other side of the sea safely, the path dispeared and the soldiers were covered by big waves. Ultimately, Moses had done his mission that leaded his people to be free. Based on humanity, a person will feel sad when his people are suffering from pains. And Moses does, too. Now, around the world, many people take a pity on people even though they are not their people. Red Cross helps people all over the world and protect them from being suffered. I think it is our model of helping others. As a student, I can donate somethings such as books and clothes to orphanages. After helping others, I think that our life will be more meaningful. Therefore, White Fang started to learn that these "gods" were happy or angry by looking at their faces. In Indians' camp、White Fang also learned how to kill other animals faster and more efficient in order to survive. After a few months, White Fang became a killer of animals and a cold wolf because nobody gave him love, even his god. Then, White Fang went south when his god moved to a south town named Fort Yukon to purchase and change something with the white gods. There, White Fang also killed many dogs because he hated animals nearing him. A white ugly man named Beauty Smith liked White Fang very much because he wanted to get money from White Fang fighting against other dogs. As a result, Beauty Smith uasually brought bottles of wine visting White Fang's god. At the end, White Fang's god had to sent White Fang for Beauty Smith to get bottles of wine because he was addicted to the wine. One day, White Fang had to fight with a big dog to win money for Beauty Smith. But this time, White Fang couldn't bite the dog because he was too big and his skin was so hard. White Fang was going to die when the big dog bit his neck. At the same time, a young white man and his friend used a gun to open the big dog's mouth and pulled White Fang out. Weedon Scott, the young white man, then paid Beauty Smith money and used a gun to frighten him and to ask him to leave the town. Scott and his friend Matt took White Fang to their small house. Scott uasully talked to White Fang quietly with meat on his hand. After a few days, Scott tried to put his hand on White Fang's head, and this time, White Fang didn't bite him. Then White Fang began to like the stroke from his "new god". One day, when Scott was leaving for California, he stroked White Fang and spoke to White Fang sadly. While Scott was on the boat, he listened to a noise. It was White Fang! Scott then decided to took White Fang away. When they arrrived, White Fang snarled at a woman angrily who gave Scott a hug. Scott taught White Fang that the woman was his mother. Then, White Fang wouldn't snarle at her. Near Scott's house, there was a chicken house. A day, White Fang killed some chickens and ate them. Scott was very angry and he took White Fang to the chicken house. Instead of hitting White Fang , Scott taught White Fang about chickens. Therefore, White Fang had been accustomed to the life with Scott. One day, Scott fell from the horse and got injured. He talked to White Fang to go home and ask for help. With White Fang's guide, the family found Scott quickly. In a cold winter night, White Fang woke up by smelling a strange man and hearing a small sound. He found the strange man and bit his neck. Later, there was a sound of a gun and the sound woke the whole family up. They saw a man dead and White Fang injured hard. They called a docter and saved White Fang at the end. Even thought White Fang was at the edge of dying , he ultimately recovered. I think it is a touching and full-of-love story. The author of this story used a wolf's life as a human's life. I think the most imporntant thing in our lives is the love with others. Only when we have love, do we lead a happy life. Love with others always makes us easy get along with people and have passion for the whole world. In the story, White Fang had love again from his new god who trusted him and taught him eveything. Among these methods, only two of them I am already using. One is "Plan my days"and the other is "Choose the right time". Because I have a week plan book, I will set goals that I should do the next day or the next week. By planning my schedule in the week plan book, I can remember that which one should I do now. I usually study before 11 o'clock at night, because I think I can't absorb what I read when I am very sleepy, and if I can't finish study before 11 o'clock, I will get up early the next morning.

Methods I am interested in are "Read for understanding" and "Keep a journal". When Iam reading, I never skim the chapter and I usually underline the word I don't know right away. In this article, it tells me that pay attentionto the headings, the first two paragraphs, and the last paragraph. And it also tells me that underline or highlight words after read the chapter. I think next time when I read, I can try this method to see if it does more effective for me to understand what articles talk about and what the central idea is. I only keep English general journal now, after I read this article, I think I can apply keeping a journal to every subjects after school.

Scrooge is a cold and hard old man. He prefers money to people. Scrooge owned an office, which was run by him and his partner, Marley, who had been dead years ago. On Christmas Eve this year, Scrooge went home and went to bed early. Suddenly, a loud noise woke him up. A ghost was standing in front of him. Scrooge was surprised that it was Marley! Ghost Marley told Scrooge that he had a chain around him because he didn't help others before he died and that there were other three ghosts would come to Scrooge to tell something. The first ghost arrived Scrooge's room at one o'clock. He was the Ghost of Past Christmas. He took Scrooge back to Scrooge's memories. He showed Scrooge the happy time on Chrismas Day when Scrooge was a child and was a rookie in his job. Scrooge was moved. The second ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Now, arrived at the same time next night. The ghost took Scrooge to his office clerk's home and to the house of his nephew, Fred. In his office clerk's home, Scrooge saw that even though they were poor, they still had a very good time on Christmas Day. On the other hand, Fred was sorry about Scrooge's cold attitude towards people, but he still wished his uncle would have a nice day on Christmas. Scrooge learned a lesson that what he had done this year were wrong. He thanked the second ghost and expected the third one to teach him. The third ghost was the Ghost of Future Christmas. They came to a shop whose owner was dead. Nobody was sad to this money-loved man. The ghost finally took Scrooge to the grave of the dead man. He read the name on the grave. It was himself! Although Scrooge guessed this when he saw the shop, the grave still made him believe that as long as he changed his attitude, his future life would be different. When Scrooge got out of bed, he found it was the morning on Christmas Day. He went out his house and became kind to people. After that, Scrooge became a happy person, not a cold one. In this story, I really agree with the words Scrooge said finally, "Peple do things and then other things happen. But the same people can do different things and different things will happen in the future. We can change the future." Our future is controlled by ourselves, not others. As long as we have possitive and kind attitude towards everything, we will lead a satisfied and happy life. Therefore, I should do my best to do everything so that I won't regret when I am old. Tull,one of Jane's cowboys,was jealous of her wealth and usually wanted to drive out Venters,who came from outside the town and was also a cowboy employed by Jane. The day Tull fighted with Venters a stranger appeared and stopped the fight. He was Lassiter,a man killed many people in the town to find out who took his sister,Milly,away from him. Tull cooperated with rustlers to steal Jane's cattle. To find out where the cattle were,Venters followed the trail. Much to Venters surprise,he discovered a beautiful valley and saved a girl named Bess,who was a masked rider of rustlers,by accident. Lassiter finally found Milly dead and shot the man who took Milly here. Tull still picked on Jane even though Venters left the town. Lassiter helped Jane run away from Tull and they ran into Venters in the forest. As soon as Lassiter saw Bess,he knew she was the daughter of his sister,for Bess looked like Milly very much. To escape from being killed by people Tull leaded.Jane and Lassiter closed the entrance of the beautiful valley,and at the same time,Venters took Bess out of this horrible town. The reason for I chose this book is that I like stories about adventure. When I read the book,it wasn't as excited as I had thought. Even though it doesn't meet my expectation,I learn something about cowboys and cultures about 19th century in America from the book. At this time,I think I am more effective than last time. In the story 、a brave man usually took respect to the winner after the fight and was royal to him during his life . I think it is what called knight-errantry . In addition 、King Arthur always put his people and his country prior to himself 、which I consider it a thing that a great king will do . After reading this book 、I have learned that a person will succeed if he is confident in himself . When I am reading 、I always read aloud the content so that I can remember what I have read more than just look at the book . By doing so 、I can also take the opportunity to strengthen my speaking ability . However、there is a problem when I read the book . I always stop read the content when I see names or places that I do not know how to pronounce . What should I do 、give me some advice please ? This is my first time reading English books choosed by myself . I do not think that I am effective in reading books . I usually delay the schedule I planed in advance for several days .
