Quiz 5 陳宣汝

A.
Chandler was planning to proposal to Monica, so he took Monica to a fancy restaurant.  However, while they were in the restaurant, they bumped into Richard, Monica's ex-boyfriend.  The atmosphere was so weird that Chandler couldn't proposal.  So the plan was forced to canceled.  Chandler was afraid that his plan would be inspected, so he took Joey's advice to pretend that he is a man who will never get married.  The suggestion really worked.  Monica believed that Chandler wouldn't marry her.  That made Monica feel sad and thought their relationship had come to an end.  By that time, Richard came to tell Monica that he's still in love with her.  And if she would, he could gave her what Chandler couldn't, that is, the marriage.  Monica got confused and didn't know what to do.  After Chandler knew what Richard told Monica, he was very angry.  For god sake, Chandler found Monica finally, and of course, he proposed to her.  On the other hand, Ross decided to break up with Elizabeth.  Because he saw no future between Elizabeth and him.

B.
Among these six characters, I love Joey most.  Because no matter what the difficult problems, or the depressed situations he faces, Joey can always look on the bright side and try his best to improve and wait for the next opportunity coming.  If I have to choose whom I like least, I think I'm gonna pick Ross.  Because I think sometimes Ross seems to be a kind of coward.  I don't like his hestitation at all.

C.

I do love to watch Friends.  I've never thought that watching a foreign series episodes is much easier than I was imagining.  Besides, I learned a lot common talks and conversation skills from the series.  Some conversations are a little difficult to understand because of relating to the culture differences, but while I understand the meaning of the conversation I can also learn the cultures in America.  That's a great learning I think.

Charlie Case, David Case's little brother, who has just learned to walk. In a sunny day, Charlie walked into the David's room, and climbed onto the window sill. He saw the green, green grass, some beautiful flowers, a clear blue sky, the flying birds, etc. When the little birds flew past in front of his face, Charlie thought the little birdie was talking to him. It seemed that the birdie was saying " Why not fly?" After seeing this colourful and energetic world, Charlie was so excited. Then, he reached his arms out to the sky and prepare to fly...... Just the moment, David rushed to his little brother to grab him down and held him tight in his arms. David was so shocked! His shirt was soaked in sweat and he tried to calm down. But Charlie didn't know about anything, he just kept saying "Bir...die". David watched this little guy, and started to wondering "What if I didn't come just in time?". This thought kept in his mind and dragged him under.

From that day, the day David saved his younger brother's life, David wanted to control his own life. So he changed his name, and the way he looks. He left home and met a series of strange and extraordinary misadventures.

Wow,wow, wow! I'm so glad that I started to read the 3rd book in this semester. Though this is the last reading journal in this semester, I will read this book 'til the last page. While reading the novel, I found that I read a little bit slowly. I think maybe it's that this book is written by British English. Some words are quite different from the American English. But as I read more, I trust I will get used to it.

Name of the Book:Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Author:Roald Dahl
Publishing Company:Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group, 2005
Year of Publishing:1964
Illustrator:Quentin Blake, 2005

The story continued with the RJ4. Charlie got the Golden Ticket and was allowed to visit Mr. Wonka's chocolate factory. There were total five children:Augustus, Veruca, Violet, Mike, and of course, Charlie. Every golden-ticket winner could bring one or two relatives with them. Charlie chose his Grandpa Joe to go with him. When this visit was over, everyone would carry enough chocolates home that could eat through your whole life.
During the visit, the four children wouldn't listen to Mr. Wonka's advice and done many silly things. Augutus is a fat, greedy boy. As bending over his body to drink the fluid from the chocolate river, Augutus was suddenly sucked into a pipe. But his figure was too big. So he stuck in the middle of the pipe, and they tried so hard to squeezed him out. And Veruca is a girl who was spoiled by her parents. When she saw the cute little trained squirrels of Mr. Wonka, Veruca insisted that she wanted a trained squirrel just like Mr. Wonka's instant. But her parents couldn't. Veruca was so furious that she decided to catch one from Mr. Wonka's. And then, she fell off into a hole, which lead to the place where to put the garbage. And Violet is chewing-gum girl. She chews the gum all day long. Mr. Wonka had invented a new chocolate chewing gum, as you chew it, you'll feel as you are eating a real meal. But this type of gum was still on the testing period. Violet wouldn't listen to Mr. Wonka. She grabbed the gum and started to chew it. Then, after a minute, she began swelling up like a balloon and her body turned into purple... The fourth child, Mike loves to watch TV and does nothing. When he found that Mr. Wonka could send a bar of chocolate to TV through a camera. He were so excited that jumped into the camera to sent himself to the TV. But when Mike came out from the TV, he was shrunk into no more than one inch tall. Only left Charlie who behaved so well while this great visit. And Mr. Wonka decided to give Charlie a big surprise. That is, when Charlie is old enough, Mr. Wonka will let Charlie run this fantastic chocolate factory!!!!!
"Yeepee!" I shouted like Charlie's Grandpa Joe. When I finished this book, "It's so brilliant!" I think. The novel is more fantastic than the movie. Because in this book, it give the more details about Mr. Wonka's crazy ideas. Though Mr. Wonka is a crazy man, his adventurous spirit is all we need. And the chapter about the television chocolate impressed me the most. I think the author is right. Nowadays, we watch too much television instead of reading, thinking, and imaging. And this TV addicted habit is so hard to quit in a short period. The other reason I love this part because the idea of sending chocolate to TV. Mr. Wonka claimed that he has invented a new way to advertisement. Products would be no more just images from the TV, but real objects you can grab out of the TV screen. If this techonology really exists in our modern world, how cool would the ads be!! Unfortunately, even the latest techonology can't do that. How I wish it would come true!!

Charilie Bucket is a cute little boy. And he loves to eat chocolates very much. But it seems that his family is too poor to buy him a bar of chocolate. Only on his birthday, the whole family would save few pennies to buy a bar of chocolate as Charlie's birthday present.
Mr. Willy Wonka, who is a genius chocolate maker, owns the largest company of making chocolate in the world. He can make chewing gum that never loses its taste, and candy ballons that you can blow up to enormous sizes, and he can make marshmallow that taste of violets, and rich caramels that change colour every ten seconds as you suck them. Here something's strange, no one to be seen to walk into or got out from the factory but the factory is still working and make a lot of delicious chocolates. That's a mystery.
Now, Mr. Willy Wonka hides five golden tickets in five bars of chocolates. And the one who gets the ticket will be admitted to visit his enormous, fantastic, mysterious factory.
One day, Charlie found a one dollar bill half-buried in the snow. Charlie had been hungry for days, so he picked up the bill right away and rushed to the store to buy himself his favorite candy-chocolate. When Charlie finished wolfing a bar of chocolate, he still felt hungry. So he bought another one. As he tore off the wrapper, there came a flash of gold......
It was a GOLDEN TICKET!!

Once again, I choose the book which has been adapted into the motion pictures as my extracurricular reading. I've read over half of the book, and I can't wait to read it all!! The main reason why I choose it because when I first saw the movie, I was very impressed about the vivid characters, the bright, colourful scenes. It brought me a lot of visual shock that it's so hard to forget. And I started to wonder why the director can shoot such a colourful film just by reading the book. So, I think the book must be word-magic that can stir our imagination. This is exactly why I want to read this book, though I've seen the movie and I love it very much. I just want to use my imagination to create my own fantasy chocolate world!!

Now the story goes on, as tell many of Edward's youth stories, now it's time to tell something interesting about his mid-life and his old life.
The author uses four parts called "My Father's Death: Take 1 to 4" to describe how illness takes Edward's life away slowly. I think these are the main chapter and the most important parts of this book. Because during take 1 to take 4, we can see how William, Edward's son, changes. In William's childhood, Edward always tells jokes and many exaggerated stories about what he have been encountered. Moreover, Edward is seldom at home. That makes Williams feel so unreal, unsecure and have some misunderstanding of his father. He thinks that Edward is an unpractical and a little irresponsible person, though he knows that his father loves him and his mother and this home.

For the take 1, 2 and 3, as we know, Edward lies dying. William wants to know his father much better through this chance, but Edward just wouldn't stop telling jokes. That's really pissed William off. However, as the more stories have been told, not much time for his father, Williams becomes to realize that what his father have told him is what he is trying to say in the form of stories. For the take 4, it says that Edward is sent to the hospital. And the doctor says he won't live for tomorrow. A little unconscious of Edward lies in bed, William sits beside the bed and try to talk to his father. But all he can remember is joke, all the jokes that Edward have told him. So, he moves his mouth to speak to tell one of his father's jokes to his father......

I'm so glad that I have finally read this book over. I saw the movie before, and it touched me. But somehow the book moved me much better than the motion picture. As I read the "My Father Death: Take 4" I was so sad as if I was in that situation. 'Cause my dad, like Edward, loves to tell me a lot of funny stories. Sometimes I think he's a little exaggerated, just like William's thought, though I love every story he told me so much. After read this book, I found myself not knowing much about my father really. However, fortunately, my father is still strong and healthy enough in his mid-life. So, from now on, I will take the chance whenever I can to get to know my father better. No matter what means I use, I will know what my father really want to teach me.

At last, I want to share that I learn a great sentence through this book. It says " Opportunities come in disguise sometimes." Everyone should seize the chance when it comes to you, don't just turn a blind eye and let it go.

49778003 陳宣汝 Group: Change

1. The method of "Plan Your Days" I've already used since I was in high school. Though I work out this method a little bit different from the way author recommanded. Everyday after I get up, I use a little time to think about what I'm gonna do today while brushing my teeth, washing my face, etc. Sometimes I would write down on a piece of paper if the undone tasks are too much. That's really helpful to me, I think. However, sometimes my plan seems to be too flexing. So, I would try the author's way-to spend few minutes making list of things to do and figure out what are the priorities.

2. "Capture Insights" is the part I interested in most. I think that I am a creative person. And when I chat with my friends, I usually come up with many new ideas or concepts. However, I am not in the habit of carrying a brochure or paper handy with me. And I don't think that my thoughts are important because some of them are too imaginative to work out. But after read this article, I realize that my crazy ideas might turn into something useful if it does proper revise. So, from now on, I will carry a little brochure whenever I go, and try to write down everything pop in my mind.

3. In the part "Refuse to Tolerate Confusion" it says that we should raise our hands and ask teacher for a clarification. I have a question about that. Because once I met some teachers who doesn't want anyone to interrupt during his or her teaching. And when I ask too many questions, he or she will be angry easily, though I ask after class. That really scared me. So, what am I supposed to do with that situation? Or how can choose I the right questions to ask?

The journal continues with RJ-1.The story keeps telling about Edward's youth life about studying in college, falling in love, and fight for what he desirably wants.
In the part called"the Day he Left Ashland",everyone lives in Ashland who wants to leave this town must pass through the little town with no name. But what makes this no-name town so special is that there's a dog,a fate dog.If you want to leave this town and come to this town, the dog will decide whether you can go out or not.If you can't,it will bite off one of your fingers or more. And once you've been bite the fingers,no matter how hard you try,you will never walk out of this town. And Edward is so different for the others that he was allowed to leave the town to fullfill his dreams,by the dog.In the other part called"the Old Lady and the Eye",it tells about an old lady has a fake eye made of glass. And everynight, the old lady will take out the eye clean and put in a box.But in Edward's college, there's a rumor about the eye, someone says that if you see through this eye and you will see your future, the future of when you're gonna die.One day,a gang of youths came and stole the eye.Because the old lady have helped Edward before,in order to thank her,Edward promises that he will find the eye.
The two parts above impressed me so much.'Cause it combines a real world with a little fairy tale, maybe that are not so real. But it tries to convey the concept about Edward's characristics-his brave, his promise, his wit, etc.

I've read two thirds of this book. After submitting the RJ-1,I was to read this whole book before the RJ-2.But I fail.In past two week,I tried to manage my time well.Obviously,in this part,I've a lot to learn.Learning how to manage time is so important in our lives.I will learn the lesson and correct my mistakes.Hope I'll do it better and better.

About Language Learning & Aquisition

1. I don't like to read the text books or the magazines about learning English, such as Studio Classroom,Advanced.'Cause when I was in high school,my teacher always asked us to read such magazine and gave us a lot of exams. That made me feel bored.Though I don't like that,it seems to be a nice way to learn English.I love to listen to English songs since I was a kid. Most of my English abilities are acquired from the lyrics, the articles about music, the music website, etc.I just wanna ask that if I want to improve my English, will my learning methods still work out?

2. I like to listen to BBC Radio 1(the music channel),but I've faced some difficulties.I have trouble in catching the key words in a sentence.'Cause some words are used so different from the Americans. What could I do to make this situation better?

William thinks his father is a great and an extraordinary man. But he doesn't understand his father much.He wants to know about his father as much as he could, while his father is still alive...Edward Bloom,William's father, lies dying.Though his son wants to know him better and ask him many questions,he just can't seem to stop telling jokes and the tales what he've been through. As Edward tells more and more stories, though those tales are hilarious, wretching,William becomes to understand what made his father, what he is searching for,and why he has to do.

This book is divided into three parts.Every part contains several independent stories.Til Thursday,I've read over the Part 1.Most of the stories in Part 1 are telling about Edward's youth, and why Edward is so special, different from the others. But in Part 1,it doesn't mentioned why Edward wants to leave his home town,Ashland,Alabama.

I always like to read some fictions which have been adapt for movies. That is the main reason I choose this book as my extracurricular reading. And I know that the most effetive reading way for me is to read about 30 minutes before going to bed. Because usually, when I go to bed,I won't fall asleep easily. But when I read before sleeping,it does help me fall asleep quickly and sleep well. And sometimes I would read while I'm waiting for the bus or while taking the MRT.It does good as well.Though I don't read many pages in a day,I don't worry much about that.Because what I care is that how happy I am during the reading time.

I learn a great sentence from this book and I want to share with you guys,"It was a great joy but a great burden."
