A.There are three story lines in the episode.  The main story is Chandler wanted to marry Monica.  He took her to a nice
restaurant but they bumped into Richard who was Monica's ex-boyfriend.  Because of Richard, Chandler failed to propose to Monica.  Therefore, he decided to make a plan to surprise Monica.  At the same time, Richard also propose to Monica.  Monica was in a dilemma.  But at last Monica was engaged to Chandler.  The second story is Rachel, Phoebe and Joe went to an auction.  Joe won a boat but he had no money.  In order to be an captain, he decided to pay it. The third story is Ross broke up with  Elizebath.  Ross think Elizebath was immature, so they didn't have a future.

B.My favorite is Phoebe.  I think she is funny and her thought is special.  Although she always talks at the wrong time.  I think she is humorous.  In the other hand, I like Chandler least.  I think he is easy to get angry and isn't enough patient.

C.I think it is a good tool to increase my listening comprehension.  I can learn some oral communication skills and some interesting words in our daily life.  And when I watch " Friends", I feel relaxed.  In this way, I can learn English in a comfortable atmosphere.

publishing company: Penguin Books Ltd
year of publishing: 1999

number pages: 40pages

Mr.Bastables was poor because his business went wrong. His six children wanted to help him. So they became treasure seekers. They had an idea respectively. And then they tried each of them. Although they didn't find treasure, they met an person, the Indian Uncle, at last. The Indian Uncle liked them and wes willing to help their father.

I was moved by their innocence and love for their father. In order to help their father, they tried different ideas. For example, they digged ground or tried to meet an princess. Although their ideas look impossible, they all tried their best. At last, the Indian Uncle was also moved because of their love. Besides, the story is interesting. In process of finding treasure, they met many people such as robbers and a rich man. They even became friends.

Although the story is not difficult, it is interesting. So I always can't wait to read it. I think a short story often has some interesting and meaningful things.

One day when Lottie Wilkins and Rose Arbuthnot read The Times, they looked at the advertisement, which said "To let a small Italian castle near the sea for the month of April". They wanted to have their own holiday to get away from their husbands. But they didn't have enough money, so they looked for two other women to go with them. One was Lady Carolin, who liked to be alone. The other was Mrs.Fisher, who always persisted in her old ways. After they arrived in Italy, they didn't get along well with each other in the first week. Because their personalities are different, they couldn't understand each other. But after a few weeks, they became much closer and always chatted with each other. At last, they all enjoyed the happy holiday.

Four women lived together for a month. Although they had some dispute at first, they enjoyed their holiday at last. In this period, they tried to communicate with each other. By communication they began understanding and caring for one another. I think it is important to communicate and understand others. If we are just self-conscious, it is difficult to get along with others. And it is impossible to live
alone all one's life. We need friends to share , help and take care of us.

I like this book. After I read it, I can learn the skills to make friends. Besides, I can appreciate the beautiful scenery in Italy. And I think this book is good, so maybe I will introduce to my friends.

Edmund Hooper lived with his father in a big house which was owned by his grandfather. One day Mr.Hooper had to go to London. So Mrs. Kingshaw would look after him. Mrs. Kingshaw had a boy called Charles. He would play with Edmund. But Edmund didn't want a friend. He hated Charles. So he always bullied him. Because he knew Charles wae afraid of crows and moths, he often took them to scare him. Therefore, Charles also hated Edmund. He decided to leave the house. But Edmund had known Charles ' plan and would follow him. By the time Charles had reachd Hang Wood, he found that Edmund followed him. And then the storm came. They went round to get under bushes. Unfortunately. they were lost. In order to survive, they worked together. So Charles thought that they became friends. But after they were rescued and went home. Edmund still fought against him. Because of some arguments, they hated each other much more and even wanted to kill each other. At last, Charles could not stand any more. He decided to suicide. And Edmund won.

After I read this book, I felt uncomfortable. So I don't like this book. I think Edmund and Charles are evil and stupid. I can't identify with them. I am even afraid of what they did. Although they hate each other, I don't think each of them needs to die. I think there are many ways to settle arguments. For example, we need to understand others first and then communicate with them. If we just do what we want, it is easy to make fights and the situation will become more serious. So I think the behavior of Edmund and Charles is not sensuble.

This time I think I choose a wrong book, because I don't like a book which ends in a tragedy. I will abandon myself to sorrow. So I hope next time I can find a book more suitable top me.

Among the twelve methods I think two of them are useful and I am using it. The first method is "Study efficiently". I am a "morning person". I often feel energetic and clear-headed in the morning, so that I will study more efficiently. Besides, I like to study alone. The best place for me is my study. In my study I can read according to my plan and will not bother others. The second method is "Chip away at big jobs". If I have a paper or need to do much homework, I will break it into pieces. By doing so, I will be under less stress and finish it without hurry.

After I read the article, I want to try "Read for understanding" and "View frustration as opportunities". I am not good at reading. If I read a book at a fast pace, I will not understand the meaning in the book. So I want to improve myself to read accurately and read fast. I think the approaches which the author suggests look useful, especially the first step. When I read a book later, I will skim the article and reflect on what I find. Besides, "View frustration as opportunities" is also interesting. I often feel disappointed when I face difficulties. But sometimes it will make the situation more terrible. So I think it is good to regard frustrations as opportunities. If I face some difficulties next time, I will catch the opportunity to do something rather than grumble.

I have two questions. Among the twelve methods one of them is "Keep a journal". Is it helpful to keep a journal in English to improve English? And how can we take charge of our mind in a concrete way?

Tales of Goha

aurthor : Lealie Caplan
illustrator: Peter Rush
publishing company: Heinemann Publishers Ltd
year of publishing: 1973
word level: intermediate level
number pages: 64 pages

Goha is a clever man. There are two stories about his cleverness. The first story is The Two-story House. Goha wanted to sell his house in the ground floor. But he didn't find anyone to buy it, so he decided to convince the merchant who lived on the upper floor. At first, the merchant didn't agree, because he enjoyed living above everyone else. Therefore, Goha decided to pull down his ground floor so that the merchant would never live above. The second story is The House In The Sky. A rich man, Saba, hated Goha. He decided to trick Goha. Because he knew that the king didn't like men who was boastful, he deliberately told the king that Goha can build a house in the sky in three days. In order not to offend the king he thought up an idea. He made a kite which looked like a house and painted little men on the paper. After he finished, he led the king to the garden. When the king saw the house in the sky, he was surprised and thought Goha was a wise man.

I think Goha is a clever man. He can solve his problems without argument. When he faces the difficulties, he always thinks up an idea to get away from it. I admire his cleverness and his attitude to solving problems. When the king ordered him to built the house, he didn't upset and didn't think someone wanted to defeat him. He just do his best to finish the mission. Besides, it is important that we can't take advantage of our cleverness to do bad things. We can solve problems and help others in a wise way rather than do evil things.

Lately, I began listening to music when I read the book. I felt relaxed and comfortable. But I would read the book at a slower pace. So I think this method is just suitable for me when I have my leisure time.

Silas Marner

aurthor : George Eliot
re-write author: Margaret Tarner
illustrator: Anthony Meadows
publishing company: Heinemann Publishers Ltd
year of publishing: 1994
word level: intermediate level
number pages: 72 pages

Silas Marner was a weaver and lived in Lantern Yard. The people of Lantern Yard respected him. So Silas's friend, William Dane, became jealous and decided to harm Silas. He purposely stole a bag of money and then told everyone that the money was stolen by Silas. Therefore, Silas had to leave Lantern Yard. After this event, he worked hard every day, He had no friends and no family. He was only interested in gold. But one day someone stole his gold. He was disappointed. Then one winter's evening a little child ,Eppie, appeared in his cottage and his life was changed for ever. He found something more valuable than his money and led a happy life.

I think that there are many things more precious than money in this world such as family and friendship. Because we have love, we become stronger. Because we have family and friends, we will not feel lonely any more. Like Silas, before he met Eppie, he was a selfish man. But because of Eppie he became gentler and had a sense of responsibility to take care of her. I think it is horrible if we don't have any love. In spite of much money we have, we just lead a empty life. I am glad that I have my family and friends.

Last week I always read the book when I took the bus.I think it is a good way because I can make good use of my time. When I take the bus,Iwill not feel bored.

The secret garden
aurthor : France Hodgson Burnett
re-write author: Anne Collins
illustrator: Annabel Large
publishing company:  Penguin Books Ltd
year of publishing: 2000
word level: level 2
number pages: 45 pages

Mary always looked cross.Nobody liked her and she also liked nobody. After her parents died, she was sent to her uncle's house.Living there, she always went outside and played in the garden. One day she found a garden, which was closed for a long time and nobody could go in.Then something magic happended.
She found the door and a key to get in.But everything in there was brown,so she decided to plant flowers and grass.Because of the garden, she knew Ben Weatherstaff, who was a gardener,Dickon and Colin, who was the uncle's son. Before they knew each other, they were lonely and liked nobody. But they had become more optimistic since they worked together in the garden. In the end, they were friends and lived happily.

After I read the story,I think that it is important to open one's heart.Like Mary,at first she liked nobody, but she became open and clear by living close to nature. When she planted flowers, she felt happy and began making friends. So it is good to change rather than make restrictions on ourselves.

I think it is good to read a novel every day.By doing so,I can always expose myself to English. From this experience I think the book seems  unsuitable for me.So next time I will try different books.
