This book is written by a Chinese writer, and her name is Aeline yen mah. She grew up in a big family and was born in China at a time of great change and trouble. The book has mentioned a lot of traditional customs in China. They are nearly impossible to appear in modern society, for example, the author's grandmother never saw her husband untill wedding day. Women also had to bind their feet at that time. That was a symbol of obedience. I also learned a interesting word "concubine" .

Her mother died after two weeks she was born, so her brothers and sisters treated her unkindly. Soon, her father married a new mother for them. She was a person of mixed blood. At the beginning of the book, all the members of their family were standind in a row, because her father was dead. Her stepmother told them that their father left no money for them. She started to tell the story of her family, and didn't say what happened. I am looking forward to finish the book.
