What's the terrifying thing could happen to one mankind? The dreadful Angoumois or Leviathan finally appeared? Being mute, blind, or paralyzed during the rest of life? They are all terrifying, but let's see what the situation was Richard Mathew, our hero of the book, been here.

At that night Richard helped a homeless girl, Door, who wasn't really homeless which she's not as lucky as to be. At that night, he broke his fiancée's heart. And at that night, he was involved in something he could never ever imagine. Before talking about what happened after that night, let's talk about Mr. Croup and Mr. Vamdemar first. There are three simple ways for the observant to tell them apart: first, Mr. Vamdamar is two and a half heads taller than Mr. Croup; second, Mr. Croup has eyes of a faded china blue, while Mr. Vamdamar's are brown; Mr. Croup likes words, while Mr. Vamdamar is always hungry. Also they look nothing the same. By the way, I don't think they are humans. So, where were we? That night? Forget about that night. It was a brad new day after that night after all.

Richard took a message to de' Carabas, who owed Door a favor, for Door. After they left Richard's apartment everything seemed to become normal again. Then Richard called Jessica for apologizing, but he soon figured that his phone call was cut off and he was totally late to work. He ran out to the street, trying to get a cab, but no cab seemed to see him; he ran down to the subway, but the electricity barrier just didn't take his ticket; With a bunch of swearing, Richard arrived his company on his foot. The guard didn't even take a look on him when Richard ran through him. "Gary, my god, you won't believed what the hell happened last night. Hey Gary! Are you listening to me? Gary!!" said Richard. "Hmm…I'm sorry I didn't notice you. So what can I help you?" said Gary. (I rewrite the conversation by memory) Till now, Richard thought it was a joke, and maybe it was Jessica's idea, but he soon found out it wasn't like that. He had been forgotten, unnoticed, and rejected by the world, his world. And he would soon find that his apartment had been sold by a young couple at the time after he came back there.

It's looked like Richard had never existed at the very first time in the world, he's "Neverwhere" now.
