Jane Paget, a British woman who was working in Malaya when the Japanese invaded and being captured. A group of prisoners with women and children marched around Malaya. Since no camp will take them in and the Japanese army does not want to take responsibility for them. They walked about 500 miles and many of them die on the march.

During the march, they met the Australian lorry driver, Joe Harman. He was captured by Japanese, too. He stole foods and medicine to help them but being caught and punished severely. Later, the women are marched away and believe that he is dead.

After the war, when Jane went back to Malaya years later. She discovered that Joe survived his punish, so she went to Australia to find him. In the meantime, Joe has learned that Jean survived the war and is unmarried and flew to Britain in order to search for her.

Finally, they met in Australia and got marry. Jane's dream of turning Willstown into a town like Alice came true and they led a happy life ever after.

After reading this novel, I have learned more about the history during World War Two and realized how difficult the life of people under a war.
