The newly-married held a fancy dress ball at Manderley. Mrs. De Winter decided to keep what she would wear as a surprise instead of telling Maxim. She thought about what to wear for a long time, and then Mrs. Danvers suggested her to copy a lovely white dress from a picture in the hall. She took the suggestion, and thought that Mrs. Danvers' prejudice against her had been eliminated.

At the ball, Mrs. De Winter showed up with the white dress, but it turned out to be inappropriate and Maxim asked her to change the dress, because Rebecca had dressed like this at the previous ball when she was alive. The relationship between Mrs. De Winter and Maxim became worse

One day, a ship ran ashore in the bay. The diver went down to see if the ship had broken her back, but he came across a little sailing-boat, which belonged to the late Rebecca, and found a body in the boat. Rebecca was supposed to be sailing alone, so whom did the body belong to?

Mrs. De Winter and Maxim had a talk, and they reconciled. Maxim told her that Rebecca wasn't actually so lovely, but wicked, rotten through and through. He couldn't stand Rebecca's behavior, so he killed her.

Nobody knew that Maxim was the murderer, because people thought him and Rebecca to be a model couple.

Maxim had to go to the inquiry because the body was proved to be Rebecca.

Favell, Rebecca's cousin, asked Mrs. Danvers to find Rebecca's diary to see what she had done on the day she died to prove that Rebecca was killed by Maxim.

Rebecca had visited a doctor, Dr. Baker, on that day. Mr. and Mrs., DE Winter and Favell went to London to visit Dr. Baker, and knew that Rebecca had gotten a serious disease, which became the motivation that led to Rebecca's suicide, though she was actually killed by Maxim.

There`s some mysterious elements in the story, which attracts me so much. Though the story isn`t as exciting as I previously thought, it still a good story to read.
