The story told that a priest, Ralph de Bricassart,
fell in love with a girl, Meggie. They met when Meggie
was just a little girl. Father Ralgh saw Meggie grew up
and loved her very much, but he was too proud to give up
his position in the church. Meggie couldn't let herself
show the love to a priest, either. Meggie married a man
named Luke at last; however, she did it just because Luke
looked like Ralgh, and Luke married Meggie because of her
money. Actually, there was no love between this couple.
Luke neglected Meggie so often that she couldn't bear it
anymore. Finally, she left him. Meggie had two children,
one was Justine and the other was Dane. It's true that
Dane was not Luke's baby but Ralgh's. The truth was not
be known by Ralgh until Dane was died by an accident. It
was so poor that at the end of the story, they all suffered
a big pain.
At the begging of the story, there was an introduction
of the topic of this story. The thorn bird whose sound
beautiful will find a thorn tree from the time it is born.
They will fly at the longest and sharplest thorn, and then
end its' life at there when they find it. It is the same
meaning to the poor Meggie. Meggie contributed all her life
to a man who will never promise his love to her. Although
she finally got his baby, who she thought was the only thing
she could got from him, she still lost the baby at the end
of the story. Meggie never regreted about her love to Ralgh,
and she suffered all her life in it. She once had a happy
day with Ralgh just like the thorn bird had its' beautiful
sound, but she will lose all of it at the end of her life.
It is what she was deserved because she loves a priest.
More and more novels I read, less and less time I spend on
one of them. During I read this book, I discuss the content
with my sister because she had read it before. I found that
through reading the story I could not only learn English, but
also I can learn the culture of the background of the story.
For example, from The Thorn Bird, I consider maybe the author
had experienced such a situation in the church so he could write
down such a detailed story of a priest's love affair.
